- Getting one's favorite familiar utility programs to work with and/or within
- DesqView takes a little bit of effort. During January, 1985, members
- discovered the best ways of using Burnout, CED, List, Superkey, Sidekick, and
- other programs within the DV environment. Note: discussion of each utility is
- flagged by the "@*" symbols.

-
- @* BURNOUT:
-
- Fm: Paul Ferrara 70075,252
- To: Steve Kalman 75136,360 (X)
-
- What advantages did you find the jump scroll feature offered you? That's one I
- haven't fiddled with (apparently won't work w/dBase anyway, huh?).
-
- I'm not having the same problem regarding the screen blanking the SAY's. I have
- BURNOUT installed (globally) but when it blanks, everything goes, and all
- returns with a key press.
-
- Did I mention that I'm running the Dev Rel without using d3-load.com as my
- "regular" program? Just tried 1.1 though, and it acts identical to the DR as
- far as DV is concerned. You apparently must tell DV that it writes directly to
- the screen or it overwrites when it comes up in a window. However, just
- switched back and it's okay, now, but lost it again when I tried to bring up a
- program menu.
-
-
- Fm: Steve Kalman 75136,360
- To: Paul Ferrara 70075,252
-
- I'll try burnout as a fix, it might be a work-around.
-
- Jump scroll is mentioned in the manual as a performance factor; I fiddled with
- it in an attempt to goose things up a bit, tho it seems that this goose bit me.
-
-
- Fm: Paul Ferrara 70075,252
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141 (X)
-
- Why should you have withdrawal pains? All the utilities you mention work with
- DV, but not globaly. So just a few adjustment pains, unless you want them
- available in all windows. KBFIX2 & BURNOUT work globally.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Paul Ferrara 70075,252 (X)
-
- I *think* I am having a problem with burnout loaded globally. I frequently
- fire up the at, and walk away to let it count up its 4 megs and load 9 windows.
- If I get distracted, and come back after the screen is blanked, I am locked up!
- I cannot go to any window, get the DEsq key to reactivate, or anything ... 3
- finger crash is no help ... time for the BRS. Have you had this problem (or
- Norm, are you listening?). Using Burnout2 as a device driver, I cannot load
- the screen blanker in particular windows. Is this time to go back to burnout1,
- or is there another solution?
-
-
- Fm: Norm Lew 70047,3340
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460 (X)
-
- I'm using Burnout 2, loaded globally (device driver) and without problems.
- Have never tried loading it in a separate window.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Norm Lew 70047,3340
-
- Norm, Have you ever let the screen blank from the main desqview window, or from
- the select window menu after auto loading of your windows? Try it please, and
- see if you dont have the problem ... total lockup from a blank screen.
-
-
- Fm: Norm Lew 70047,3340
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- Tried it twice from two different menus and no problems. I should tell you that
- I am using hardware blanking.
-
-
- Fm: Paul Ferrara 70075,252
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- I had the same problem Saturday night, and also attributed it to Burnout.
- Fortunately (as I was running a big dBase job in the background), I didn't have
- to reboot; the DV window eventually came up. I don't remember burnout1. I
- assume I'm using burnout2. Mine uses the device driver. Maybe Chris will see
- these messages and respond.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Paul Ferrara 70075,252 (X)
-
- Burnout1 was NOT a device drive and could be loaded from command line or batch
- files ... but if you had the problem in an application (as opposed to the
- Desqview open windows menu), then there is probably little value in trying
- burnout in individual window environments. I was hoping, that like CED, Burnout
- would work in windows even if it did not appear to work globally .... I wonder
- if we are giving burnout a bad rap? or if there is another culprit.
-
-
- Fm: Ben Klausner 70340,374
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- Am using burnout globally with DV, and not having any problems with that. Also
- discussed this with Norm a while ago, and he says it should work too.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Norm Lew 70047,3340
-
- Norm, I am loading globally too! ... Maybe there is another culprit here
- though. I just learned today that Lightning (the disk speed enhancer, not Turbo
- Lightning fools with the DMA --- whatever that is --- and makes things crash.
- That may be the source of my problems in copying files from the dos windows,
- and conceivably some of the "burnout problem", though that seems less likely
- ... jrb
- But you have let burnout blank your screen before you touch the keyboard, after
- loading DV??? <blink><blink>
-
-
- Fm: Norm Lew 70047,3340
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- Right, do not use hardware blanking. I just unloaded and loaded DV again,
- didn't touch a key, waited for the screen to blank, which it did, and hit the
- shift key. No problem.
-
-
- @* KBFIX, KBRATE:
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Paul Ferrara 70075,252
-
- ah!!!...KBFIX will work globally???... Mike Rothman had told me that he had
- problems with it, so I haven't yet added it to my AUTOEXEC for DV...
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- No problem with kbfix or kbrate under dv. Here's my autoexec.dv, and all the
- things seem to work:
- c: echo on path d:\;e:\;c:\; mode lpt1: c:\superspl lpt1:/extm/m=256 set
- arctemp=e: set baud=2400 c:\jet c:\x e:/l/v/100 c:\u1\nmi /i/q c:\u1\kbrate e2
- c:\u1\kbfix2 /f1 /kb0 /kt0 /ktr0 /d0 /s1 /v0 c:\lightng 500 c:\dv.bat
- (PS dv.bat does call up xdv for extended memory usage ... I just renamed the
- file).
- Now I am creating individual BATch files to customize the windows for each dv
- program, like the following dvato.bat which I put in \ato:
- c: search c:\ato cd \sk light cd \ato c:\ato\ato412c /p /f c:\ato
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460 (X)
-
- Since kbrate is not a tsr, it would never have any problem running before dv,
- or theoretically while within dv.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141 (X)
-
- I have had no problem with kbrate or kbfix in my autoexec.bat under DV, which
- is what I was telling Connie.
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- I was really trying to make the point that kbrate, or one of a few other
- identical programs, is not a tsr. It writes to the keyboard and doesn't remain
- in memory. This, as you know is a feature on the at and not on the earlier ibm
- pc/xt machines.
-
-
- @* LIST:
-
- Fm: Ben Klausner 70340,374
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141
-
- Haven't tried type yet, but have discovered that LIST must be used in a full
- screen window. If you don't like the speed, you can adjust the clock cycles for
- the foreground vs. the backround. Correction. I just tried TYPE in the DOS
- window, and it works fine.
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Ben Klausner 70340,374
-
- There is a new version of list, 5.56 which has been adjusted to run under dv &
- topview, plus a few minor enhancements. Curiously enough, it isn'there, or at
- least not to my knowledge. The problem with 'type' arises if I try to type a
- file on another disk, using the 'filepath' path. If I am on the disk where the
- file is there is no problem.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141
-
- I am using list 556 (from Rothman's board in Pacific Palidades) ... and it may
- be here too .... runs fine on my AT with DV 1.2. The slowing is a significant
- disadvantage, but sometimes like when working an Rbase application with
- frequent shiftings between a wordprocessor and Rbase, the 2 keystroke feature
- of making that shift in dv pays for the entire banana.
-
- I miss global availabilty of ced, absence of auto macros for each applicaion
- window (there is 1 globally), inability to get a spooler working in background
- (including superspool that came with the rampage at package--- though Norm
- apparently has no problem with spooling --how?). I hate the idea of having to
- go to batch files to set up mmy environments (loosing 2k per bat file, and the
- slowness of bat file execution, particularly under dv) .... The loss of ced
- capacity globally is difficult to imagine ... <so why doesn't Quarterdeck hook
- into ced ... whatever that means....>
-
-
- @* CED:
-
- Fm: Michael Rothman 74405,1313
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- I'm having good luck running superspl loaded before desqview on my at. Also,
- I'm loading in ced in one or more windows which are my dos windows. In a
- typical session, I'll have say one window open running the bulletin board, and
- then more or more other windows open for other work. If I need dos access,
- I'll just open a dos window, load ced and have the near equivenant of the at
- all to myself, although the bbs is in the backgrounds. I *like* it!
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: all
-
- Anyone run pro-ced under desqview? I haven't been able to do so.
-
-
- Fm: Chris Dunford (INF) 76703,2002
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141
-
- Coincidentally, I just heard today from one of the other testers, who indicates
- that PCED does work with DesqView if you "make a DOS window." What that means,
- I haven't the foggiest. Perhaps you can enlighten me.
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Chris Dunford (INF) 76703,2002 (X)
-
- What it means is that you can do it, if you may load it when at dos level
- within one of the desqview windows. I just got the revised 1.2 today, date
- 1/10/86, then after applied having the patches uploaded in dl0, tried to load
- pced again. Hung. Well, I finally figured out that you can load pced only
- under a dos window, if the dos window is the first one loaded within dv. Why
- this is, I don't know, but it is so. After rebooting (cold!) I tried pced in a
- dos window loaded FIRST, and it loaded.

-
- @* NORTON UTILITIES:
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- Under DV, Norton's gets "installed". NU is TopView-happy in that it has a PIF
- file. Under normal conditions, in color, the background is blue with white
- letters and high-intensity yellow (I think it is). Under DV, NU is loaded as
- NU /TV /P, which inverses the color scheme and looks terrible...
-
-
- @* UTIL21:
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- I had a horrible experience last night using Util21 in a dos window with
- Superkey loaded. All files copied to floppy had lost clusters, and files on
- the source hard drive (and some that I had NOT tried to copy) had
- interconnected clusters ... what a mess! Have you tried Superkey in DV windows
- yet? I am afraid to find out whether DV is barfing on Util or Skey.

-
- @* TURBO LIGHTNING:
-
- Fm: Gary Saxer (Quarterdeck) 73206,564
- To: Michael Rothman 74405,1313
-
- Is there a constant amount which needs to be added to a programs memory size in
- order to run Turbo Lightning? Also, does it make a difference if you bring up
- the DESQview menu while Lightning has control?
-
-
- Fm: Michael Rothman 74405,1313
- To: Gary Saxer (Quarterdec 73206,564
-
- On running turbo lightning in a dv window... it works and very nicely.
- A couple of things to remember. First, Lightning writes directly to the
- screen, so the window should be so configured, or the user can live with the
- results. The DV menus do seem to come up just fine while Lightning has
- control. I've tried that and see no problems. Finally, there are many
- different ways to configure Lightning, depending on the ways it accesses a
- variety of dictionaries. I reserve about 70k for the program, but that number
- could be as large as about 120k if the user elects to load more into ram.
- Performance is just fine.
-
-
- @* SIDEKICK:
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- What other Notepads are you aware of besides Sidekick. I am running sk in a
- separate window tonight, and it really is no worse than SK when resident ...
- though I have seen others comment that there are better notepads, calendars,
- etc. I mostly use the notepad, find the calendar too limited to be useful,
- never use the ascii conversion, use my hp instead of the calculator ... so I
- guess I just want a calendar and a notepad ... maybe there is a neater one for
- my dv window..
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- I believe that Nelson Ford has the answer to that one... I use the notepad
- extensively, the calculator quite a bit (for hex conversion), and the ASCII
- table... I'm loading SK into each window that I use and it works reasonably
- that way...
-
-
- Fm: MIKE ZIMMERMAN 70745,1506
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- I used to use sidekick/superkey but they seemed to interfere with some of the
- programs I've written so I quit using them , but I have a phonebook program and
- a calculator program that I install in a window (when needed) ... and with
- desqview scripts I haven't seen any other need for super key. Therefore I don't
- see loss in not using sidekick/superkey combo!
-
-
- Fm: PETER MCKINNEY 74166,1301

-
- I load Skick before DV and have had no problems with 3 partitions opened, 1)
- Kedit 2) DB3Compiler 3)dbase. I find I can get Skick up anywhere!
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: PETER MCKINNEY 74166,1301
-
- REALLY!!!!... Now that is good news!!!.. The manual suggests not using it
- globally since it reduces the RAM from all partitions, but I use SK in every
- window anyway... How about screen handling when loaded globally??? I note that
- loaded in a window and being called up, I sometimes lose part of the SK window,
- necessitating recalling SK with Ctrl-Alt...
-
-
- Fm: Paul Graf 75166,3670
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- Am I missing something? If you want a notepad window in Desqview, why don't
- you just keep Kedit in one window?
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Paul Graf 75166,3670
-
- Well, I like some of the features of the notepad windows ... but I may get used
- to kedit windows....it seemed like there must bve a slick program with
- "notepad" features +, but taking a lot less memory!
-
-
- Fm: Paul Graf 75166,3670
- To: Jim Butler 74766,1460
-
- I suspect that part of the problem is that most notepad users are fairly picky
- about the features they want/don't want. What you like, I might not, and vice
- versa. Anyway, what do you care about memory usage, you've got 4 meg!
-
-
- Fm: PETER MCKINNEY 74166,1301
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- I would agree that it would take away some of the ram , but when loaded in each
- partition where one wants SKick, you would be taking more ram away, overall.
- As for the screen, there is no deterioration that I can see of a significant
- nature.
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: PETER MCKINNEY 74166,1301
-
- No, I have no argument from the RAM standpoint... I only questioned because
- the manual states that if you load it globally and call it in any window, then
- ALL the windows get interrupted. However, considering that it's the only way
- that I can get PCTC to download in background, I have no choice... BTW, I do
- notice that the screen handling is much better with SK loaded globally...
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- How do you mean that screen handling is much better with sk loaded globally?
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141 (X)
-
- When I load SK in an application window via a batch file, often times when I
- call it, there are "holes" in the SK screen where the DV menu accidentally pops
- up... I've also noticed that the cursor sometimes gets lost in SK in a
- window... Another thing is that the SK load screen takes up more than half of
- the screen, and as such, when you open a window and load via a batch file, the
- garbage is left there in that portion of the screen that is not in the window.
- I have gotten around this by doing two things: in the batch file itself,
- following SK with a CLS; then open a DV window (calls the batch file), zoom to
- full screen before SK is called in the batch, waiting till the CLS is executed,
- and then zooming back to the normal window size.
-
- With SK loaded globally, all the above is obviated...
-
-
- Fm: Earle Robinson 70135,141
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010 (X)
-
- But, when you load sk globally, you can't use it while multi-tasking. That
- means one has to remember not to do so.
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Earle Robinson 70135,141 (X)
-
- well, yes and no, ... if you've loaded it globally, then yes, it does interrupt
- all windows, but it would depend on what you're doing in the background... For
- instance, in my application of DV, if I'm doing DL maintenance, then it
- wouldn't hurt at all to interrupt; uploading and downloading might be another
- matter as I haven't tried that yet...
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Norm Lew 70047,3340 (X)

- in???...

- Fm: Norm Lew 70047,3340

-
- Using the Add Program module, add SideKick as a program, or load it in your DOS
- window. Then all you do to get to it, is tap the Alt key and then the window
- #. If you load in the same window every time, getting to it is as natural as
- Ctrl-Alt. This may not work for you, however, because of your Key-Kick combo.
-
- PS Check out DV's cut and paste, especially the append option. It's really
- quite good.
-
-
- Fm: Steve Kalman 75136,360
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010 (X)
-
- Connie, I don't load SK globally because of the maximum partition size
- restraints. Without rehashing it all over, the more RAM used up before loading
- DV, the smaller the max mem size becomes for each partition. Since there are
- some apps where I'd never need SK and others where it's a MUST, I load it where
- needed via BAT startup.
-
-
- Fm: Ben Klausner 70340,374
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010 (X)
-
- I looked at adding SK globally, since, like you, I want it handy. What I
- finally did though, is to open a SK window in my startup macro, and then
- immediately put it aside to save memory, then I defined another macro in the
- windows I most commonly use to zap me to SK, and then another to zap me back.
- Since my AT at work has only 640K available (plus extended memory), I had to
- conserve as much space as possible.
-

- Fm: Norm Lew 70047,3340

- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Ben Klausner 70340,374
-
- yes, I could do it that way, but I normally use Skey functions to automatically
- cut and paste with SK... I'll have to look into it further... BTW, you say
- "put aside" your SK window... Where do you put it aside that it doesn't take
- up precious RAM??? Not to disk???...
-
-
- Fm: Gary Saxer (Quarterdeck) 73206,564
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010

- Quarterdeck recomends that TSR programs which "pop up" should be run inside
- windows. Others (like RAM disks and network drivers) should be loaded before
- DESQview. Note that, run in a window, programs like SK can be run while
- another, usually incompatible, program is also resident. Such a feature!
-

- Fm: Paul Ferrara 70075,252

- With 1.2, why is it that if I load SK in a window (192K) and then execute any

-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460

- Gary, Can you tell us fans of Desqview anything further about the "unconfirmed
- rumors" of things like special notepads, and other goodies for DV? How about
- (1) built in screen blanker, (2) more than 9 windows if memory permits (making
- little notepads, spreadsheets, etc more feasible), (3) a backscroller (sorta
- like backscroll2) that either is available on a window-by-window basis or which
- works globally in DV, (4) better spooling for the AT, (5) a program to limit
- memory for neat (but rude) programs like the latest version of Think Tank which
- gobble up ALL expanded memory without switch to limit amount taken? Is any
- progress being made to accomodate Chris Dunford's CED or Pro-CED program with
- DV on global basis (for CED), and (by rumor only, 'cause I dont have PCED) to
- make PCED work even on a window -by-window basis?

- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Clyde Washburn 70305,1211 (X)
-
- ohhhh... I take it then that there is no way to re-program the hot-key in DV..
- I didn't think so on my first pass thru the manual, but I thought maybe I
- missed it... I wonder if this would apply to Ctrl-Alt for Sidekick too, i.e.,
- hold down the Ctrl and hit Alt... Looks like it might be Shift-Shift time, but
- that combo is such a pain...
-
-
- Fm: Clyde Washburn 70305,1211
- To: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
-
- Don't use SK, but a DV techie told me that the pgm sequentially checks for
- shift down then, if so, alt down, rather than testing the instantaneous shift
- state with a mask for shift and alt. Thus similtaneous depression is seen to
- be just an alt (DESQ) tap, as the shift key was not down when checked LAST. It
- drives me bannanas when a company asks us to believe they are brimming with
- genius, then design the software so it conflicts with, or operates counter to,
- the most popular PC software of the epoch. If DESQview could be made to
- provide the std DOS command line interface, and switch context with a
- keystroke, like DoubleDOS, I'd be much happier. I don't have one program that
- I have the slightest inclination to futz around windowing -- but loads that can
- go do something in the background while I do something else that needs my
- direct attention.
-
-
- Fm: Jim Butler 74766,1460
- To: Clyde Washburn 70305,1211 (X)
-
- Simple answer: invoke skidekick with ctrl-alt, use shift-shft to blank out
- screen on burnout, and use the Shft-then-alt of dv <grin> its just a new game!
-
-
- Fm: Conrad Kageyama (Sysop) 76703,1010
- To: Don Singleton 76154,26
-
- The drawback on running globally is that if you call SK, it stops everything,
- i.e., say I had PCTC downloading in the background and Lotus in the foreground.
- If I called SK in the Lotus window, PCTC would stop too, whereas if I had SK
- loaded in the Lotus window, it would only affect that one window... Ideally,
- one should load SK into each window where it's needed... In my case, that
- would be all windows, but I'd like it to act in that one window only... I
- guess I'll have to load globally though, since I haven't figured out how to
- make it work in a PCTC window... However, Norm has just inferred that I may
- have missed a special PCT load.com file, so I hafta go back and look...

- I have not been using Superkey with DV ... so I am only speculating on what I
- may do with Superkey. Certainly, all the macros I have in Superkey make my
- life much easier. And DV's macro capacity seems very, very crude ... but I
- have not tried to convert even one set of macros yet ... so I am reserving
- judgment ... maybe it will prove better than it seems (isn't the unknown always
- more intimidating?). I hate to waste all the memory by loading Superkey
- globally (or was Norm saying that did not work anyway), and it seems just as
- bad to use Superkey in several different windows. The *real* answer would be
- for Quarterdeck to beef up the macro capacity of the program to rival Prokey or
- Superkey!!!!

- I can tell you right now not to bother trying to load SKey globally.. Bad
- things happen...<grin>... Unfortunately, unless QD really gets with the
- program, I can't afford to give up Skey cuz I've got so many macros tied
- directly to calling SideKick... I've not worked real hard on making Skey work
- in DV yet, but I've got a sneakin' suspicion that it won't...

- Then you CAN load SuperKey in an individual window?

- Me too Connie. I have got so many ssuperkey files, and the Learn function is
- SSSSSSOOOOO crude, that it is a step back . It would be a shaame to limit
- Desqview to operating 2 or 3 programs simultaneously, and having to do
- everything else outside DV. It defeats the whole purpse of DV .... If the
- macro/learn capacity of dv were just brought out of the pleistocene era ... I
- would be ashamed to call it a macro capacity. Having to decompile, change to
- an editor, recompile, and all in such low power capacity. Tich, tch, tch ...

- Many of my Skey macros call SK and use its functions as part of the macro...
- And this is what is important to me and cannot be duplicated by DV's system...

- Norm, Are you using SuperKey or Prokey in any DV windows?

-
- yes, I've tried Skey in a DOS window, and it denied entry to the DV menu (guess
- it overwrote the DV hotkey). However, that was loaded in a big START.BAT for
- that window and something else may have caused the problem... I've not yet
- gone back at it piecemeal... However, if you recall, we all carefully worked
- out the load order sequence for the important TSR's. I now have SK and KBFIX
- loaded globally, which means that if I load Skey in a window, it will be "out
- of order" and will probably cause lock-ups...

- I braved using Superkey in a couple of DV windows (like Lotus), and it seems to
- work fine without any problems ... I just loaded a few worksheets, executed a
- couple key macros, and exited, nothing heavy, but all seems to be ok ... and
- with all 9 windows loaded, switching to other windows, tinkering, and back to
- Lotus .... Looks like my problem was with Util 21 under the DOS window.
